A Beginner's Guide to Ordering Bubble Tea
By Gong Cha Don Mills Team · · 2 min read

Walking up to a bubble tea counter for the first time can feel like decoding a small language. Between milk teas, fruit teas, foam caps, and topping codes, the menu is wider than a typical coffee shop — but the logic is friendly once you know the flow.
Step 1: Pick your base
Most drinks start with tea (black, green, or oolong), milk (dairy or plant-based where available), or a fruit line built on green or oolong tea. If you want comfort and creaminess, lean milk tea. If you want something lighter and brighter, try a creative mix or brewed tea. Not sure? Royal Milk Tea and Honeydew Milk Tea are reliable first cups — one classic, one mellow and melon-sweet.
Step 2: Choose sweetness and ice
Toronto weather swings, and so should your ice level. Regular ice is standard for iced drinks; ask for less or no ice if you are sipping slowly indoors. Sweetness is personal: we suggest 50% sugar for your first milk tea if you normally drink coffee with one sugar. Fruit teas often shine at regular sweetness because acidity balances the sugar.
Step 3: Add toppings (or skip them)
Pearls (tapioca boba) are the classic chewy finish. Grass jelly and aloe add texture without as much chew. Milk foam drinks layer a salted, silky cap — drink through the foam first for the full effect. You can order many drinks without toppings; there is no wrong answer.
Step 4: Order in store or on Uber Eats
At the counter, tell us your drink name, size if applicable, sugar, ice, and toppings. On Uber Eats, use the customization fields the same way — they map to what we prepare in shop. Prices on our menu mirror a recent delivery snapshot; in-store totals may differ slightly.
A simple first order
Try: Oolong Milk Tea, 50% sugar, regular ice, with pearls. Caffeine-conscious? Filter our menu for caffeine-free options or ask for taro or wintermelon lines.
Bubble tea is meant to be playful. Adjust on visit two — that is when most people find their forever order.
